Purpose
Our goal with this little blog/group is to watch a couple movies each month, chosen by a mutually agreed upon person. Then said group rates said movies, posts small reviews, and discussion ensues.

Sven's Review of Twilight

Well, this is embarrassing. I've actually read the book; not the whole series, but I did read the first one. Before the books became movies, I knew someone (a guy) that liked them. He said they were cool, so I read the first one. So I'm reading it and just thinking, "Well, whatever. It's alright I guess," and then it gets to the Edward sparkles scene. "What the hell am I reading?!" I did finish it afterwards, but I was baffled as to why my friend liked the book (I later found out he was gay. Question answered).
Another embarrassing fact: I've seen this movie twice, once in theaters. *sigh* I blame my girlfriend... or something.
I actually thought the concept could be interesting, so I actually looked forward to the movie. I didn't really get the teeny bopper vibe while reading the book, so I was hoping the movie would be like a toned down version of Blade or something. In retrospect, why in the world did I expect that? Maybe I just didn't want to admit to myself that I'd actually read a book meant for preteen girls (though somehow it's smashed that demographic and now all women are reading it).
Well, nope, the movie wasn't Blade. It was slow, had terrible acting, bad special effects... it literally felt like a high school (maybe college) film project. The story really could have been stripped from a fan fiction web site.
Here's my biggest question: Where the hell did this film's budget go? With a $37 million budget, this film should have had tie fighters and explosions galore. For a comparison, The Terminator had a budget of $6.5 million, and Aliens a budget of $18.5 million. Where the hell did this money go?
The cheesiest part of this movie has got to be when James the tracker vampire leaps across the ballet room at the end of the movie. It looks like he's being pulled on strings! It's so awful!
Kristen Stewart, stop making that stupid contorted face. I'm sick of it.
This movie would get a 1/5, but it gets a 2 because I was actually curious to see how they adapted it from the book.

Did that guy become your not-so-secret boyfriend?
ReplyDeleteAlso, The Terminator and Aliens budgets at the time (1984 and 1986) were around the normal for those types of movies. Today, the average movie's budget is around 30 million with big blockbusters being in the 100's.
ReplyDeleteI think the budget goes to paying the caterer for all the food on the set. I'm planning my wedding right now, and after seeing what places charge, that is the only reasonable explanation I can come up with.
ReplyDeleteSome better movie budget comparisons are Slumdog Millionaire, $15 million, and The Wrestler, $6 million, both of which were released the same year as Twilight.
ReplyDeleteI know, I know, I'm the "PC" one, but your reasoning that your friend liked the book because he was gay was very stereotypical. I am almost certain that quite a few gay men would not read Twilight for various reasons, and even if your friend enjoyed it, I am curious what his sexuality has to do with it. Just saying.
ReplyDeleteI refused to read the book or watch the movie because of a feminist program I heard about Twilight on community radio. Does that make me a bleeding liberal? Not necessarily. I saw Red Riding Hood, the latest movie directed by Catherine Hardwicke, and in spite of the ridiculous looking wolf (think The Great Nothing from The Neverending Story), I did cry during the ending, and was very attached to the granny and the main characters at the end. Go figure.
as to the budget, $1 million went to pay the cast and crew, $1 million for "special effects," and $35 million for Robert Pattinson's hair gel. that stuff ain't cheap.
ReplyDeleteI <3 Aliens!!! :D
ReplyDeleteI <3 Mickey!!! :D
